when i was young, my father's family held ritual
for almost all holidays. on valentine's day, we
had the valentine's man.
in short, we (all the kids)would wait at my
grandmother's until nightfall on valentine's
night... and someone outside would come knock on
the door. then, an adult on the inside would
peek out the window and make sure it was 'safe'
for us to go outside.
once it was safe, all the kids would rush to the
door and find a shitload of candy thrown all
on the porch... then we'd run out and grab it
as fast as we could... and wait for him to return.
this would continue for several knocks until the
'man' was all out of candy.
as a child, the valentine's man scared me....
regardless of him surrendering candy on the ground.
while this evening didn't score me some candy...
the valentine's man came knocking.....
*gets scared*

for some reason, the first thing that came to mind when i read the name of this topic was
"By the spirit of christmas past, present and future". But it isn't even in the season for it yet!
Anyway.. great custom! Though i generally don't trust people who give free candy, unless they somehow balance it with some sort of punishment for bad little children. At least you'll know your parents are behind it when that happens.

i suppose the rationality of an 8 year old isn't
that advanced..... we just want the farking candy
and we don't care if it rained out of the ass-end
of an elephant.
however, if its a counter-balance you are seeking,
rest assured that if you didn't get your gay
scared ass out on the porch fast enough, you
wouldn't be getting a damn thing! heh heh
